PS x Takumi no Yume Hakama Pants in Navy
Practice Studio’s first design collaboration features the work of Japanese weavers Takumi no Yume and has been created in partnership with West End retailer Kazuyo Kashiwagi. Kazuyo and PS founder Kat have created versatile and size adjustable pieces intended to celebrate the cloth they are made from.
As with each piece in the collection, these trousers move away from traditional Western patternmaking techniques. Each leg spans the full width of the fabric to minimise textile waste and has just a single inside leg seam. Two patch pockets and fixed pleats on both the front and back of the pant add extra dimension to this style, disrupting the lines of the plaid fabric. Fabric pattern placement will vary with each piece made so no two are exactly the same.
Based on the Japanese hakama-style pant, the waist can be adjusted through ties to fit a range of shapes and sizes, creating extra pleats where desired. An extra band of elastic at the centre back has been integrated for comfort and ease of movement. Two belt loops on the front and an additional security loop sewn into the waistband ensure that the ties do not ride up.
Our two fabric colourways were inspired by famous ukiyo-e block prints and woven on a single layout of vertical (warp) threads - only the horizontal (weft) threads have been changed. After a lot of experimentation and dialogue with Takumi no Yume we were able to find a beautiful harmony across both versions of the fabric.
Takumi no Yume specialise in making Sakizome fabric, textiles woven from pre-dyed threads. Different combinations of thread types, thicknesses, and arrangements are incorporated, allowing the weavers to create a wide range of patterns and textures. While the process incurs greater manufacturing costs, these pre-dyed threads minimise colour fading, a key characteristic of this high quality fabric.
We hope you enjoy wearing this beautiful, lightweight Japanese cotton and have fun exploring the different ways to wear our pieces!
